Our Research Approach

Our lab uses a multi-method approach to further the understanding and treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD). We seek to integrate experimental and clinical studies, and aim to identify the mechanisms that contribute to the etiology and maintenance of this condition. Peripherally, we are interested in studying anxiety and trauma-related conditions, such as PTSD and depression.

We hope that our work will promote a better understanding of these disorders and contribute to the developing field of mechanism-based psychological interventions.

PTSD

At the intersection of social anxiety and depression are many common cognitive mechanisms. One of these mechanisms that our lab studies is the cognitive flexibility to change their negative beliefs as a response to new information.

Evidence suggests that the occurence of a social trauma plays a key role in the development of both PTSD and social anxiety alike. Our lab studies the processes after social trauma that leads to these developments.
